Rising Sea Levels - Flooding Costs

 

Having looked at the impact of the sea level rise I wanted to see how much insurance for flooding would cost someone, I checked GoCompares website and there they listed this information which gave an estimate based on distance from water how much flooding insurance would cost a homeowner. I would have thought that proximity and price would have changed a lot when further away from the water however it seems to stay pretty close to that £193 figure, along with this flooding insurance isn't as expensive as I thought it was however it's still something that anyone living near a body of water will have to consider as it is now a real possibility that flooding will become less and less rare.

Looking at countrywide cost estimates for the damage flooding can cause is very scary, seeing that in 2015/16 flooding caused £1.6 billion worth of damage is crazy and that between November and March flooding caused around £333 million worth of damage just makes me even more scared for the impending impacts of climate change and the real damage it can do to everyone. I wonder if bodies of water can have both a positive and a negative impact on someone's wellbeing depending on what the water is doing, for example on a calm day it is calming but if they see it literally destroying homes would that same calm water have the calming effect.

  For my next idea I wanted to keep with the theme of the sea, but this time I decided to see if I could connect it with my interests in space. When I was thinking about this topic I began to think about stargazing and how sailors used to use the stars for navigation, this really interested me and made me think if this type of navigation was still being used. Doing some very quick research on this subject I found some fascinating information, before accurate navigation, navigating the high seas with no landmarks was extremely difficult and caused many ships to be wrecked and lost. In 1714 after the loss an entire British fleet due to navigation errors the British government passed the "Longitude Act" that authorised money prizes for anyone who could solve sea navigation.

More Ideas

  The next image mindmap we were told to carry on creating mindmaps with images, this time I came up with more ideas trying to be even more free-flowing and trying to keep away from my original ideas. The first set I started on was these; I started with a piece of graphic design by David Carson whose work I absolutely love, starting from this image I found myself looking at things to do with counter culture as he was very much a part of that. I put images of punk and grunge bands up alongside his work and strangely enough I found myself coming back to brutalist buildings which I found fit really well into this aesthetic of grunge, punk and counter culture. Along with this, I put in images of a PS1 and PS2, I'm not really sure why I did this but thinking about it now after the fact they really do seem to fit into the style and feel that all these images create (and that is very odd to me). The Sea and Mental Health

looking at all my mood board I think the subjects that interest me the most are the sea and the connection between the sea and mental health, while I may at first connected the pollution of the sea and harming of sea creatures to the decline of people's mental health I now want to look more at how going to the coast and being near large bodies of water may improve people's wellbeing and mental health. From my own anecdotal experience when I am near the sea and sat by the coast watching the waves a sense of calm comes over me.  Just from a quick Google search typing in "sea and mental health" you can find loads of articles about this sense of calm and happiness that comes over people when they are near the sea or large bodies of water. I think it would be a really interesting project to learn more about this feeling that people get and why exactly it happens.
